Black Forest Cherry Fluff Salad

EVERYDAY TABLE  ·  Nov 6, 2026

Black Forest cherry fluff salad takes the flavors of the classic German cake (chocolate, cherries and cream) and stirs them together in one bowl. Chocolate pudding gets lightened with whipped topping, loaded with brownie cubes and dark chocolate, then streaked with cherry pie filling. It feeds 10, needs no oven, and suits holiday potlucks where you want a chocolate dessert that travels in its own bowl.

What goes into the bowl

  • 1 box (3.9 oz) instant chocolate pudding mix
  • 1 1/2 cups cold milk
  • 1 tub (8 oz) whipped topping, thawed, divided
  • 1 can (21 oz) cherry pie filling
  • 2 cups brownie cubes (about half an 8×8 pan)
  • 4 oz dark chocolate, chopped
  • 2 tbsp shaved chocolate

The whipped topping does two jobs here. Part of it goes into the pudding to make the fluff, and the rest sits on top as dollops. So when you open the tub, measure out the 2 cups for folding first and set the remainder aside in the fridge. That way you don’t scoop the whole thing into the pudding by habit.

Two things that keep the fluff light and the cherries bold

Let the pudding set before the topping goes in

The most common problem with any pudding fluff is a soupy bowl. It usually happens when the whipped topping goes into pudding that is still liquid. Whisk the mix with cold milk for the full 2 minutes, then leave it alone for 5 minutes. In that time it thickens to a soft, spoonable texture that can hold air. Folding whipped topping into that base keeps the fluff thick enough to stand up on a spoon.

Fold, don’t stir. Use a wide spatula, cut down through the middle, sweep along the bottom and turn the pudding over the topping. Rotate the bowl and repeat until no white streaks remain. Hard stirring knocks out the air you are trying to keep.

Stop swirling sooner than you think

The recipe’s own tip is the one to follow: swirl the cherries only two or three times. Cherry pie filling is glossy and red, and when it stays in thick ribbons it looks like the layers of a cut cake. Keep dragging the knife and the red bleeds into the chocolate, leaving a muddy brown-pink bowl. Two or three passes with a butter knife is enough, even if it looks unfinished at first.

How to build it

  • Whisk the pudding mix and cold milk together for 2 minutes. Let it set for 5 minutes.
  • Fold in 2 cups of the whipped topping until the mixture is smooth and evenly brown.
  • Fold in the brownie cubes and most of the chopped dark chocolate. Hold back a small handful of chocolate if you want some on top.
  • Spoon the cherry pie filling over the top and swirl it in gently with a knife, two or three times.
  • Add dollops of the remaining whipped topping, sprinkle with the shaved chocolate and chill for 2 hours.

Why the brownies and chocolate go in at different times

Brownie cubes go into the fluff after the topping, never into the warm-from-the-whisk pudding. That order matters because the cubes are soft. If you fold them in while you are still working the topping through, they break into crumbs and the bowl loses its chunks. Adding them last, with a few gentle turns, keeps most cubes whole.

The chopped dark chocolate gives the bite that soft pudding and soft brownies can’t. Chop it into rough pieces about the size of a chocolate chip or a little bigger. Fine shavings melt into the background, which is what the 2 tablespoons of shaved chocolate on top are for. The two textures together echo a slice of Black Forest cake: soft crumb, cream, and crisp chocolate curls.

Serving it at a potluck

Make this in a clear glass bowl if you have one. The cherry ribbons and brownie pieces show through the sides, and people know what they are scooping before they reach the table. Use a large serving spoon and dig straight down so each portion picks up fluff, brownie, chocolate and a streak of cherry.

The 2-hour chill is part of the recipe. It firms the pudding, softens the brownie edges slightly and lets the cherry filling settle into its ribbons. Keep the bowl in the fridge until you are ready to serve, and return any leftovers to the fridge, covered, as soon as the table clears. Because the dish is built on whipped topping and pudding, it shouldn’t sit out in a warm room.

One box of pudding and half a pan of brownies make all 10 servings, so the other half of the 8×8 pan is yours to snack on or set out next to the bowl.

A few questions before you make it

Why is it called Black Forest?

Black Forest cake is a German layer cake of chocolate sponge, cherries and whipped cream with chocolate shavings on top. This fluff uses the same combination: chocolate pudding and brownies for the cake, cherry pie filling for the fruit, whipped topping for the cream, and shaved chocolate to finish.

Can I use homemade or store-bought brownies?

Either works. You need 2 cups of cubes, which is about half of an 8×8 pan. Fudgy brownies hold their shape a little better in the fluff than very cakey ones, which can crumble when folded.

My pudding stayed runny. What went wrong?

Check the milk temperature and the timing. Instant pudding needs cold milk, a full 2 minutes of whisking and 5 minutes of resting to thicken. Warm milk or a short whisk leaves it loose, and the whipped topping can’t fix that later.

Do I need to thaw the whipped topping?

Yes. The recipe calls for it thawed. Frozen topping won’t fold smoothly into the pudding and leaves icy lumps, so move the tub to the fridge ahead of time.
